First year students in MVS participated in the FAI Futsal tournament which was held on the new 5 a side pitches in Tullow Community School on Tuesday, 15th November 2016. Each game lasted 20 minutes and each team had 3 games on the day. MVS entered a mixed team in the competition this year.
The first game of the day kicked off around 1pm and saw MVS face Gaelcholáiste Cheatharlach. The game began in a light drizzle and Gaelcholáiste got the upper hand early in the tie. However, a strong second half display meant that MVS got their first goals of the tournament through Eoin Kirby and Timmy Clarke. Isaac Nwogu showed great pace and skill through-out this match up.
In the second fixture, MVS faced a strong home team from Tullow. They battled hard and were rewarded with a goal from Patrick Fennelly.
The third match of the day was a much tighter affair. MVS scored first but a lapse in concentration allowed Hacketstown to level. The students from MVS didn’t give up and got on the score sheet again through Michael O’ Leary. Some good defending by Kayla Walsh and Mats Balder prevented the players from Hacketstown stretching their lead on a number of occasions but as the team began to tire, Hacketstown were able to seal their victory.
The team received great support from Leah O’ Brien and Daniel Dunican on the day. Well done to all involved.
